New York City Aikido is a dojo established for the purposes of education in, practice in and dissemination of the Japanese martial art of aikido (合気道) developed by founder Morihei Ueshiba (O Sensei). NYCA holds empty hand and aiki weapons (staff and sword) training sessions in midtown Manhattan, near Penn Station, New York City, NY. NYCA is affiliated with Aikido Schools of Ueshiba (ASU), with black belt ranks issued through the Aikikai Foundation (Aikikai Hombu Dojo). Our dojo principally follows the path of teachings of Mitsugi Saotome shihan, a direct student of the Founder, and Hiroshi Ikeda shihan.

Our principal instructors are co-founders Tracy Alpert (5th dan), and Sherman Lau (2nd dan); both are students of Mitsugi Saotome sensei and Hiroshi Ikeda sensei. Tracy trained at Boulder Aikikai under Ikeda sensei and Tres Hofmeister sensei for almost 20 years, before moving to New York a decade ago. Sherman also studies internal martial arts, systema, and yoga, and incorporates those into his aikido practice. Additional instructors include Yakup Batlevi and Daniel Rozenbaum, each of whom has been practicing aikido for almost 20 years.
