Aikido of Livermore - Shinrei Dojo was established in 1989 and was the first Aikido dojo in the Tri-Valley area. We offer traditional martial arts training in the Japanese arts of Aikido and Shinkendo. We are a member of Aikido Schools of Ueshiba (ASU), an association of more than 90 affiliated dojos. Mitsugi Saotome Shihan serves as the supervisory instructor for these ASU dojos. Saotome Shihan began as a special apprentice with the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba (O’Sensei), in 1955, and continued until the founder's death in April of 1969. In 1975, Saotome Shihan decided to leave his highly respected position as a chief instructor at Aikido World Headquarters in Tokyo to come to the United States. He established ASU to further O’Sensei’s teachings and affiliated the organization with Aikido World Headquarters-Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo, Japan. Our dojo is also affiliated with the International Shinkendo Federation founded by Toshishiro Obata. Obata Sensei acts as head instructor for over 85 Shinkendo dojos in the US and around the world. After many years of study and mastery of many different schools of martial arts in his native Japan, Obata Sensei came to America to distill all of the different aspects of Japanese swordsmanship into a complete and comprehensive art. Obata Sensei has dedicated over 50 years to teaching and researching the almost lost art of true Japanese Swordsmanship as it was once practiced by the ancient Samurai of Japan's feudal era. The dojo’s founder and chief instructor is Jim Alvarez Sensei. Alvarez Sensei holds the Aikido rank of 6th dan (6th Degree Black Belt) personally awarded by Mitsugi Saotome Shihan and certified by the Aikikai Hombu Dojo-Aikido World Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. He also holds the rank of Shinkendo Kyoshi & Toyama Ryu Batto-do 5th dan certified by the International Shinkendo Federation.
